Information

Amsterdam Grotesk is a revival of a wood type discovered in the type case of an old printing workshop named Unitype in Brussels. The distinctive terminations of the letterforms immediately capture attention—shapes that exude both unexpected charm and singularity. Amsterdam Grotesk serves as a generous reinterpretation of the Grotesque/Gothic tradition, infused with a distinctly calligraphic sensibility evident in its ending strokes, ample bowls, and other defining features. Designed as a true workhorse family, it bridges the gap between historical revival and contemporary refinement—stabilising certain inherited shapes to create a typeface that is both robust and remarkably elegant. This makes it ideal for complex editorial environments and large-scale typographic systems. Following the initial discovery, extensive research was conducted to trace the origins of these wooden letters while simultaneously developing the typeface. This sans-serif version marks the first step in the creation of a broader family. Designed for versatility, Amsterdam Grotesk meets the demands of signage systems, branding, global visual identities, and editorial design with clarity and sophistication.
