Heavy Metal : a graphic epic

What began as an idea for an article on Metal lettering has eventually become a 320-page book.

The project originated with Blaze Type founder Mathieu Salvaggio, who suggested that Sébastien Hayez investigate the distinctive lettering and visual language of Metal band logos. Faced with the sheer scale of the subject, Hayez chose not to attempt an immediate overview. Instead, he began by speaking to one of its most prolific and influential practitioners: Belgian logo designer Christophe Szpajdel, known as the “Lord of the Logos” and responsible for thousands of designs within the Metal and extreme Metal scenes.

Their conversation lasted nearly three hours and became the extensive interview Christophe Szpajdel: The Lord of Logos, published on the Blaze Type blog in 2023. The discussion provided a first foundation for a much broader investigation into the history and evolution of Metal logos.

Over the following years, Hayez expanded the research, bringing together printed sources, archives and material scattered across the Internet. The investigation gradually developed into a history of the graphic languages associated with Heavy Metal and its many subgenres and microgenres—from Heavy, Thrash and Death Metal to Black Metal, Grindcore and their numerous offshoots—and of the ways in which their visual codes evolved alongside musical ones.Over the following years, Hayez expanded the research, bringing together printed sources, archives and material scattered across the Internet. But the story does not end with Metal. Once deeply rooted in an underground culture, its graphic vocabulary has increasingly escaped its original territory. Its distorted, thorny, symmetrical or deliberately illegible letterforms can now be found in fashion, rap, hardcore techno and hyperpop, as well as in contemporary tattoo aesthetics such as cybersigilism.

Published by L’Échappée in association with ABM éditions, Heavy Metal. Une épopée graphique traces this remarkable journey: how a visual language developed within an underground musical culture gradually crossed its boundaries, circulated through other scenes and ultimately entered mainstream visual culture.
